The Most Great Hallowen Decorations for Halloween Day 2011 Part 5

Materials

  • Pumpkin
  • Leaves, sticks, seeds and other autumn objects
  • Orange rinds
  • Round toothpicks
Instructions

  1. Collect twigs for hair, a pinecone for a nose and gourds, cloves, corn kernels and dried Indian corn for other facial features.
  2. For ears, cut orange rinds into semicircles. Then press the items into the pumpkin or attach them with round toothpicks.
  3. Top your character with a colorful leaf crown (use the stems to "sew" the leaves together).

2. Pumpkinhead Scarecrow

This scarecrow -- affectionately dubbed "Balancing Bob" -- has a knack for using his noggin.
Materials

  • Medium pumpkin
  • Permanent markers or acrylic paints
  • Large plastic bags
  • Leaves
  • Overalls or pants
  • Boots
  • Duct tape
  • Spool of fishing line
  • Large sewing needle
  • Safety pins
  • Flannel shirt
  • Straw hat
  • Coat hanger or thick wire
Instructions

  1. Holding the pumpkin upside down, draw or paint a face on it (the bottom of the pumpkin will be the top of the scarecrow's head).
  2. Loosely fill two tall plastic bags with leaves and insert them into Bob's pant legs. Slip the bottom of the pant legs into boots. Attach the boots to the pants using duct tape or a needle threaded with fishing line.
  3. Stuff Bob's shirt-sleeves and chest with bags of leaves. Attach the shirt to the overalls with safety pins.
  4. Unbutton the top few shirt buttons, and insert a long piece of wire that stretches from one sleeve, through Bob's chest and out the other sleeve. Rebutton the shirt.
  5. Now, in the spot where you want Bob to be (you'll need an easily reachable tree branch or other overhanging support), place his hat on the ground, then put his head in place. Have a helper raise Bob's legs while you insert the arm wires into the ground and position the neck of his shirt so that it meets his head.
  6. Attach fishing line to the boots and then wrap the fishing line around an overhead branch and tie it securely. Finally, make any adjustments to Bob's posture so he appears to be standing on his head.

3. Say Boo! Pumpkins

Spell out a spooky message with four odd-sized pumpkins.
Materials

  • 4 pumpkins
  • Carving knife
  • Marker
  • Candles
Instructions

  1. First, use the marker to draw the letters and exclamation point on the pumpkins.
  2. Cut the tops off with a sharp knife (parents only); for best results, carve at an inward angle. Make a small hole in each cap to allow heat from the candle to escape.
  3. Remove the seeds with an ice-cream scoop and scrape the walls until they are about 1 inch thick.
  4. Cut out the drawn letters with a paring knife or pumpkin-carving tool, then light a candle in each one.

4. Scarecrow Treat Bag

If you'll be handing out goodies this season -- at your child's school party or to visitors on Halloween -- fun and festive treat bags like the one below will surely do the trick.
Materials

  • colored markers
  • lunch-size paper bag
  • white crayon or chalk

Instructions

  1. To make one, simply use colored markers to draw scarecrow-style facial features onto a plain brown lunch-size paper bag.
  2. Use white crayon or chalk for eyes and teeth.
  3. Fill the bag with goodies, then staple the top closed, adding a bundle of raffia for hair.

5. Sinister Signs

Forewarn roaming revelers with these creepy party decorations.
Materials

  • Scissors
  • Posterboard
  • Markers or paints
  • Tape
  • Various spooky props
Instructions

  1. These signs add to the haunted decor and make exploring the house even more fun for Halloween partygoers. Use posterboard and markers or paints to create the spooky messages and hang them around the house.
  2. For the bathroom, make a sign that reads "Spider Farm" and decorate the sink and tub with little rubber spiders and their webs. Realistic webbing that stretches easily from object to object is available at novelty shops.
  3. If there is a room you would rather the kids didn't explore, put up a sign that reads "Do Not Enter: Experiments in Progress" (then lock the door).
  4. For a scary touch, hang a paper skeleton in a closet and create a sign for the door that cautions "Warning: Enter at Your Own Risk."
